Woman Making a Difference: Traditional Home Classic Woman Awards

This Monday marked the seventh time Traditional Home magazine has celebrated amazing women making a difference through volunteerism with their signature program, Classic Woman Awards. The honorees are also featured in Traditional Home's November/December issue on newsstands now.

I absolutely loved that they chose to tie this year's awards to the start of the holiday season. The idea of giving of your time and talents to others especially those in need really resonates with me (as I am sure with all of you) - but even more so during the holidays.

Please join me in congratulating and thanking the exceptional woman listed below. I was lucky enough to have the chance to speak with many of them on Monday and they truly are just as beautiful and inspiring in person as they are on the pages of the magazine.

New DC Design Center Lobby Designed by Solis Betancourt

Every year the Washington DC Design Center puts their entrance lobby in the hands of a very, talented local designer. This year, they have selected the incredible firm of Solis Betancourt! And we were thrilled when they selected our upholstered screens designed by Juan Montoya. Just take a look at Solis Betancourt's website and you'll see why we (including Juan) were so honored to be included.

Confession time: picking paint color scares me. I find it so overwhelming - all the options, how light comes into play and the fear of making a mistake. So of course I am in awe of an individual with a great sense of color and confidence in making bold selections.

For me its been amazing to work with Juan as we select colors for the showroom installations of his new product line for us. He is an artist in his approach and not shy about selecting bold colors. Just take a look at a few of the recent installations - part of what I love is how color transforms the same product - and you'll see why he really is an icon!

Venetian plaster was used in New York.

Benjamin Moore "Sherwood Tan" #1054 was the color of choice for Los Angeles.

Possibly my most favorite, in Boston, Benjamin Moore "Stuart Gold" #HC10.

For the Chicago display, he selected Benjamin Moore "New Retro" #422 (we had three requests the first day for the color number.)

And last but certainly not least, Benjamin Moore "Heritage Red" for Philadelphia (its an exterior color but they can do in interior paints). Wow!

Veranda Presents Century Icons

There are just those days when you have to pinch yourself .... for me Tuesday, September 20th was one of those days! Along with Veranda's Editor-in-Chief Dara Caponigro we hosted a panel discussion and reception featuring our, three iconic designers: Charlotte Moss, Juan Montoya and Miles Redd. The panel described as an "intimate conversation with the designers, revisiting their collections and the personal icons that inspire them" was only scheduled for 30 minutes but the dialog was so great it lasted for over an hour. It was amazing! All had such amazing rapport, Dara had incredible questions and it was so much fun!

Some of the best quotes of the evening:
* Miles' advice "pick up the phone. A little confrontation is good. Don't hide behind an email."
* Biggest mistake "...not trusting my instincts....", Charlotte.
* Juan, "...a room needs to smile at you." As well as, "The client has to trust you...." when speaking about the intimacy in the relationship.
* Miles laughing, relayed that as he has gotten older the function is becoming more important.
* With regards to color, "Baby blue--a room can always use it.", Miles Redd.
* All designers agreed, they are inspired by fashion - in addition to Oscar de la Renta inspirations also from Diana Vreeland, Balenciaga.
* When Juan spoke about the relationship with his clients he notes, "...he always looks at what they are wearing, and the shoes." All about getting to know them and their style.
* "Design is in the details, because after all they are just curtains, right?", Charlotte.
* Dara asked about advice to young designers and emphatically the answer was, "Get out from behind your computer screens and go see the actual product."
* Final words to live by, "Buy beautiful items and make them work" as well as "...always selling pretty."

Veranda editors selected their favorite items from each of the designer's respective collections and curated displays throughout the showrooms.

We also used our big night to celebrate our upcoming launch of Charlotte Moss for Century Icon's. The collection is targeted to be available to-the-trade in Spring of 2012. On display for the evening was the Richmond Chair and Raleigh Ottoman which will be a part of the collection.

Those Ladies Got Style: Tilton Fenwick at Hamptons Designer Showhouse

Okay I admit it, I have favorites.

Pieces of furniture from Century's collections that secretly hold a higher place in my esteem. So you can image what a proud momma I was after walking into this stunning room at the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse designed by the very stylish ladies at Tilton Fenwick to find one of my favorite "babies" included in the design!

Our Tortoiseshell Cocktail Table #60T-611 from Oscar de la Renta collection - isn't it just the peak of chic-ness? Rumor has it this piece actually belongs to one of the lovely Tilton Fenwick ladies! So jealous!Congratulations to Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro (the very stylish ladies behind Tilton Fenwick) on just a gorgeous room and of course having such wonderful taste! I thought I would share with you all some additional detail shots of their room. Special thanks to Michael Rodenbush and Scout Design for the photography.

Elegant and timeless this livable bedroom was a study in black and white accented with beige. It was so chic, just like the ladies that designed it - Joy and Tammy Tribout, designers based in St. Louis MO.

"Firm believers that one's home environment should elevate living on a daily basis, Joy and Tammy create beautiful interiors that support and enhance family life. I'd say this beautifully designed guest room shows Joy and Tammy's gifted ability to design gorgeous environments for a well-lived life!

The furniture selected is from Century, the ladies combined our Weathered Pine and Chalk White finishes on the pieces. The accessories including the artwork and pillows are available through Joy's shop located in Ladue, MO (a suburb of St. Louis). Elle Decor: July/August 2011

Is it me or are this month's shelter magazines just incredible? I'd offer to loan you mine to peruse but I've torn them to pieces; saving pages for my various inspiration folders. Again, is it me or does everyone do that?

This month's Elle Decor is another wonderful read, I especially loved Celerie Kemble's transformation of an Upper East Side Townhouse. So gorgeous! And of course I am partial to the dining room especially since they used our Oscar de la Renta #609-306 Radial Table.

This story's gone straight into my "Personal" inspiration file. How I would love to have a home just like this! (At least I've already got a lead on the dining table ....)

Traditional Home: July/August 2011

I loved this month's issue of Traditional Home, it was wonderful to see all the rooms from last year's Hampton Showhouse which Traditional Home sponsors. I am so excited for this year's showhouse, which opens on the 23rd of July. Our New York City showroom manager got a sneak peak last weekend and said it was amazing!

We had such a great experience at last year's showhouse, working with Nancy Pearson on the back porch. Pictured above, lower left corner; Nancy used our Riviera Collection (sectional and dining chair in foreground), mixing in one of our Chatsworth Web Dining Table. It was a gorgeous space and it was so nice to see it included in the spread.

Speaking of fabulous outdoor settings, how beautiful is Beverly Farrington's terrace in Huntsville, Alabama? I was admiring the story and then did a double take as I noticed our Orient Collection arm chairs (pictured above). What a great setting!

These chairs really are wonderful - so comfortable, great lines, 100% outdoor AND they are available in six different finishes.

Traditional Home always has really great market reports, showing a wide range of products - what's new and great. We were thrilled to have our Bob Timberlake Cabin Chair & Ottoman featured. What a fun chair, I love these personality pieces.

The East Coast Launch of Juan Montoya for Century Icons

We celebrated the East coast launch of Century Icons: Juan Montoya in Atlanta last week. Juan had been invited by ADAC management to be a key note speaker for their month long series entitled "Design Defined".

So we packed up the truck which included several, never seen before pieces from Juan's collection and set about creating some magic. And of course Juan did not disappoint - the room is amazing!

Thought I would share some photographs (and remember I promised a pic of Juan making the bed) ....

My newest, favorite piece (so hard to choose, I'd be lying if I didn't admit to having multiple favorites) is the "Strap Dining Table" #I19-301. I especially loved how Juan staged the table for how "he sees it being used .... beyond a formal dinner party" with a cozy setting for two at the opposite end of a table that also provides space for reading and displaying one's library.

Juan graced us with a wonderful presentation in Atlanta, showing an inside look at some of the spectacular homes he has designed. Afterwards, we hosted a reception in the Century showroom which included a meet & greet with Juan as well as a book signing.

A very special thanks to Juan Montoya as well as the entire ADAC team including Susan Zinger, General Manager of ADAC, and our local Century team Mary Ellen Taylor, showroom manager, and Dale Story, showroom sales for making this event such an amazing success!

DC Dream Home 2011: Designer Rooms Inspired by Jewelry

As we all know, inspiration takes many forms. And I loved how the Washington Design Center used jewelry as the theme for their Dream Home 2011.

We were thrilled to be included in the room designed by Willard and Palmer Interior Design's Charlotte Palmer Lekakos. Inspired by jeweler Ann Hand's American Collection's "Great Seal Pin" made of 18k gold, diamonds, sapphires and rubies (photographed above); Charlotte designed a wonderful sitting room.

The room is rich with details of the American spirit with an updated look of today's casual lifestyles. Charlotte's tasteful interpretation created an inviting space for visitors of the Dream House. I love her quote describing the room in the opening night journal, "The patriotic palette is sophisticated and, most of all, optimistic!"

Charlotte selected our #22-271G sofa from Century's Signature Collection, a wonderful #779-707 3-drawer chest from the New Traditional Collection and an SF3024 Accent Tortoise Chair from our Grand Tour collection.

I cannot decide what's more dazzling - the jewels or the rooms? You?

The Washington Design Center's Dream Home is open until December 9th 2011, Monday thru Friday 9am - 5pm. It is free and open to the public.

I spent some time perusing Lonny's May/June issue this weekend (a perfect past-time for a rainy Sunday morning, I highly recommend it) and was so excited to find our Faux Painted Console #SF5024 made the cut as one of Michelle's pic's "WE WENT MAD FOR"! What an honor, thank you Michelle and Lonny for showcasing one of our products.

If you haven't seen the latest issue of Lonny - its a don't miss! Featuring a look inside the Lonny offices (I die over the "Princess Pyne Chintz"), a tour of New Orleans and Todd Alexander Romano's home in West Hollywood are among some of my favorite features. I especially love the new technology that allows more video (see Michelle's "letter" from the editor) features.

Century Icons: Juan Montoya

We recently celebrated the US launch of 'Century Icons: Juan Monotya' in Los Angeles at the Pacific Design Center's West Week . Juan was on hand for the unveiling and graciously presented a slide show of recent projects as well as signed copies of his newest self-titled book, "Juan Montoya".

What a tremendous turnout - thank you to Brian Millard our showroom manager and all of the PDC staff for their efforts in making this a successful launch.

We were so blessed to have Juan's creativity and input in creating the display of the furniture. It is amazing to watch such an incredible talent at work, at every level - from the combination of textures on the sofa (velvet, grosgrain ribbon and a backed sheer), accessorizing the etageres to actually making the bed (if only I had a picture of that). Just magnificent! Thought you all would love to see some photographs from the big day!

A Market Highlights-Part 1

Every High Point market my intention is to show the transformation of our showroom start to finish, but somewhere in the craziness of the preparations I get to the opening day and say the same thing again, "I should have taken photos of this place before!"

This time, in part thanks to Mr. Bob Timberlake, a true creative spirit, incredible artist, and part marketing genius, I finally did it. Bob kept saying to us as we were in product development meetings how he wished we had captured the entire creative process of bringing product to market. He wished we could show our customers how much goes into the design process and showroom creation so that they could understand better how things come to life and appreciate how much work goes into one piece of furniture.

I have watched this showroom transform every year since I can remember. When I was little my Mom used to load us up in the Suburban and drive us down to High Point twice a year to come see my Dad during furniture market as for the week or so of market this is where he lived. I remember the crowds, how important it all felt and the amazement of it all. As a kid it was kind of like Hollywood, lots of lights, flowers and important people in suits. It all seemed very glamorous.

Of course my perspective now working for Century is very different. Lugging a 40 lb chair or hanging point of sale material just doesn't make a girl feel very glamorous. However, from time to time I do stop myself and think about what goes into pulling together our showroom from product development all the way through to the finished rooms. Truth be told it is more like Hollywood than I ever realized at age six. What they are able to create and the feelings that they evoke through their films--pure magic. We too through our 80,000 square feet of showroom space are creating and trying to inspire our customers to see what a home can be and when it all comes together it is pretty magical.

The behind the scenes of anything is never very glamorous, but it is fascinating and as Bob Timberlake wished, I too wish it gives you a sense of how much goes into each piece of furniture we make. What follows are photos from the start almost a year and a half ago of our Timberlake product development all the way through to High Point market.

Before and After--A Custom Story

One of the most exciting things to see coming through our factory is a piece of furniture that has been completely customized. Our talented craftspeople work weekly on requests from customers to make items taller, wider, shorter or longer. They remove doors, add doors, change veneer patterns--you name it our team has probably done it. From the inital request through to the finished piece, these projects are some of the most challenging things we do, but also extremely rewarding and the end results are simply stunning.

Shown here is our in line Milan Dining Room table, 849-303, with soft bronze base. A gorgeous table, it features a satin walnut veneer top which can be finished in any of our 50+ finishes. The base can be requested in soft silver or bronze as shown. The standard size shown here is 88"w, 42"d, 30.25"h with one 22" leaf.

Now here is where it gets fun! Shown below is a customized version of this table coming through our plant at 212" long. Being used as a conference table, the cut outs in the top are for AV Boxes that the customers' techinicians were installing once the table arrived. You tell me how you can see this in the plant and not be excited!
And the finished version is just that much more beautiful.

As you can see there is no end to what our artisans can do. As we like to say, "If you can dream it, and draw it--then we can probably make it." Afterall, a home is personal and we take furniture personally.

Century Furniture: "New York City Style"

Next stop on our tour across the country of the Century Furniture showrooms - New York City.

One of our biggest challenges in the showrooms is how to show the vast and diverse line of products within a limited amount of space. Here in New York, the showroom is just over 5,600 square feet, so there's no way we can show everything. Instead what we do is use the showroom to spotlight new products, our designer introductions and create displays that speak towards the newest in fashion and design trends.

Since we sell everything off the floor at anytime in all our showrooms (hello, immediate gratification) it gives us the chance to continually change the product mix and displays!

And so here's just a taste of the latest, exciting installations we have here in New York .....

Century Furniture: "Boston Style"

I always love going to our Boston showroom! Its such a beautiful city. I find it to be very vibrant; celebrating both its historical roots as well as modern culture. We find this dichotomy exists in Boston Style, as we sell both traditional and contemporary designs equally well. Actually Boston design as a whole I believe is a great blend of traditional and contemporary - cultivating a fresh, modern take on classic styles. I think you will agree this look is very evident in our Boston showroom.

Located in the Boston Design Center, our showroom is on the 4th floor (suite 447).

Anyone who's been to High Point can tell you its like Disneyland for home design. In addition to seeing the latest products, it is a trove of inspiration for decoration. One of my favorite things to see is the floral arrangements - ranging from lavish to simple. Gives me great ideas to bring to my home and upcoming projects.

(When you look closely that you realize the flowers are set around a mirrored finial which gives a bit of shimmer and reflective qualities make the bouquet more lush.)

Greetings from High Point! Its been an amazing market - great to see everyone and even more importantly there's a true feeling that the business has taken a turn for the better!! With that said, I thought I would share some of the exciting new product, designs and trends in a series of "Dispatches from High Point". First, my favorite fabrics and trends:

1. Grey continues to be a strong color direction since the Spring. For Fall, I loved seeing grey infused with caramel. Just like we are seeing in fashion (think Michael Kors newest collection): such a sophisticated and new (for home) combination of neutrals.

2. A second color trend is bottle, kelly or malachite green: a rich vibrant emerald. Looks amazing when paired with black - so dramatic!

3. Peacocks remain to be a strong motif in product design. I just loved this Robert Allen print that featured peacocks in a really fresh light-blue colorway. So soft, pretty but still elegant.

Birds of a Feather

Have you ever found once inspiration strikes, you begin seeing reflections of the idea or image everywhere you look? Ever since seeing Jeffrey Bilhuber's living room, with its regal peacock, I have always thought what an extravagant and beautiful touch for a room's decor! (Photo Credit: Jeffrey Bhilhuber)

So when we discovered an peacock for sale at an Atlanta market we couldn't resist! Here's an image of our feathered friend perched in our New York showroom.

Too much? Definitely not and I am not alone in my love - I have been seeing peacocks and inspired by motifs throughout high end design.

"Design Embellishments"-CEU in Dania Beach

One of the things we enjoy most is having the opportunity to travel and talk to and teach people about furniture. Recently we hosted a number of designers and friends in our corporate showroom in Dania Beach for a CEU presentation titled "Design Embellishments". This presentation by Eric Graham, our Senior Manager of Casegoods and Century Leisure, introduces the participants to the various techniques that can be applied to high-end wood furniture. Eric walked through construction, physical and finish distressing procedures and ended with a hands on demonstration of gold & silver leafing, dry brushing and hand applied wax. It was a wonderful afternoon.

Century Furniture: "Washington DC Style"

Recent travels have brought us to our nation's capital and a visit to the Century Furniture Showroom in Washington DC. Nestled among monuments and museums, the Washington Designer Center is a great resource for designers (and the public, as the design center allows browsing and has a "Entree-Access to Design" service that can facilitate buying)and our showroom is a beautiful showplace of all "things Century".

Centrally located on 300 D Street SW the design center is convenient to the metro as well as both Union Station Train Station and Regan National Airport. There is a public garage located in the center and an array of coffee shops and restaurants for those wanting to make it a day trip for design!

Our showroom is located on the 6th floor and features an assortment of Century collections in all our categories: upholstery, casegoods, outdoor, textiles and accessories (including lamps, mirrors, artwork). In addition to Century product we also carry more accessory-type lines from other manufacturers - one of a kind pieces, rugs and many more accessories. Everything you need for a stunning home!

September 1st, and with the turn of the calendar page I find myself welcoming a new season; the crisp days of Fall call for richer colors and luxurious textures - both in fashion and home design. I can think of no better synergy between the two than Oscar de la Renta's home collections. And I am just LOVING Miles Redd's (Creative Director for Oscar de la Renta Home) new installation at the Lee Jofa showroom in the D&D Building.

Lee Jofa or Century Furniture

When Cargill's BiOH® Polyols business, along with Toray Interational's Ultrasuede brand made with EcoDesign™ approached me to ask if Century would partner with them on ProjectUDesign, my only reaction was yes--how and when do we help. A design competion which has challenged 15 SCAD students to design an upholstered wing chair that would be both sustainable and sellable sounded fresh and exciting to me. For Century, the ability to work with a group of students, our industry's future designers and customers, and to see what their vision of such an iconic piece would be, has been educational and ultimately inspiring. Their energy and enthusiasm for furniture and furniture design is uplifting.

As part of the process, we hosted the students and their professor, Jason Wech, at our factories in Hickory, NC. We spent the morning touring our upholstery plant and meeting the various craftspeople who will be challenged to bring the winning design to life. Craig Staton (pictured below), the designer of Century's Natural upholstery collection, presented one of his new designs and spoke to the students about how a designer and manufacturer work together to create and what it takes to bring a design off the paper and into production.

They also were able to watch the complete upholstering process for a wing chair so that they could better understand the way materials combine to bring the furniture to completion. It's one thing to draw something, it is quite another to create it and ensure that what you intended on paper is represented in the actual piece.

The sponsors have already voted to narrowed down the designs to 6 and the public voting will open this Friday, September 3rd. At this point design lovers will be able to select their 3 favorites which we will then showcase in our High Point showroom this October. I am excited to see how people will engage with the designs in voting process and which design will ultimately become the next Century wing chair!

Century - "Philadelphia Style"

Across the country we have network of to-the-trade showrooms: each carries the entire Century Furniture line in addition to accessories, artwork, lighting, rugs and more - all set in inspirational displays.

While we sell to-the-design trade we are open for retail browsing and a great point to start for all "things Century"!! I thought as part of my travels it would be fun to introduce you all to each of our locations, first our showroom located in the Marketplace Design Center Philadelphia, PA.

More than a table

My sister-in-law recently sent this poem out to me and others, and reading it I was struck by the meaning and how it relates to what we at Century do and strive to create. Furniture is certainly a commodity. We need it to sit on, sit around, sleep on, set things on, etc. But truly it is so much more. Enjoy!

Perhaps the World Ends Here

The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what,

we must eat to live.

The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the

table so it has been since creation, and it will go on.

We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe

at the corners. They scrape their knees under it.

it means to be human. We make men at it,

we make women.

At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts

of lovers.

Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms

A Look Behind the Curtain .....

A few days ago I shared photos of this year's Hampton Designer Showhouse. As I am sure you can imagine the tremendous effort that goes into the conception, planning, coordinating, installation and finishing of all those small details needed to create a such a beautiful space. And of course any such undertaking is not without hurdles or challenges ..... or a mound of dirt in the driveway blocking the delivery truck thus requiring all the furniture to be carried up the very long driveway to the house (I only wish we had taken a photo of that!)

A huge thank you to Nancy Pearson, her staff as well as Mark Copeland, Sara Johnson and our amazing plant (who made the pieces in just 3 weeks) at Century for their efforts in making this a reality!! I thought I would share some photos taken during preparations and behind the scenes .....

2010 Hampton Designer Showhouse

The 10th Annual Hampton Designer Showhouse opened on Sunday, July 25th. Presented by Traditional Home magazine and benefiting the Southampton Hospital, this year's home is AMAZING! We at Century were THRILLED when approached by Nancy Pearson to work with her on the kitchen porch. Not only is Nancy a very talented designer but she's super sweet and so much fun to work with! We loved how she mixed our Riviera and Chatsworth collections (all 100% outdoor) in white with the bright purple & pink ikat pillows, chic garden stools and saffron china.

Who wouldn't want to spend a summer afternoon on this porch?

The Riviera sectional is shown above with our white, sailcloth fabric on the "half skirt" slipcovers. There are additional seating (sofa, chair, ottoman, cocktail and end tables) and dining (dining tables, chairs and barstools) pieces available. This collection can be done in any of our in-line fabrics (as well as COM) and the frame can be finished in 5 paint finishes: cloud, sky,crimson, jet, meadow and cafe. And did I mention it is 100% outdoor - it is!

Washington DC - Halls of Fame 2010 Dream Home

The Washington Design Center opened it's doors to a new location of "Dream Home" earlier this Summer. Designers selected, all honored Hall of Fame designers, to showcase their talents were Olvia Demetriou, David Herchik, Kelley Proxmire, Frank Babb Randolph, Michael Roberson, Nestor Santa-Cruz, Victor Shargai and Rita St. Clair.

We at Century were honored to have both Kelley Proximire and Michael Roberson use our product in their installations. I always marvel at how designers can take a piece and make it look completely different by relation to the space and coordinating pieces, fabrics and colors. I was able to visit the showhouse and was blown away by how marvelous the rooms were!!

Kelley Proxmire used two of our Omni Mirror #558-235 (photo above) in the grand entry. I just loved the bold black and turquoise color scheme; chic, classic "old-Hollywood".

Michael's room was so fresh - loved how she really played off the natural light and created a "garden room" ! She used our Oscar de la Renta Rope Arm Chair #60-3267. She used our Chalk White finish on the frame and simple white duck cotton for the cover (its even Sunbrella so no worries about spills).

The chair now feels almost sculptural, like a piece of marble. This piece could be my most favorite of the entire house!!

I also loved how Michael displayed her business cards, just feels like Summer with all those sunflower seed packages.

This February 14th I'm not looking for red roses or a heart-shaped box of chocolates, what I really wish for is a pair of "Valentine red" sandals just like these from Oscar de la Renta (of course completely inappropriate for navigating snow & slush covered sidewalks expected this week in New York).

Speaking of Oscar de la Renta I am also coveting his new collection of furniture which we debuted late last year and will ship early Spring 2010. My absolute fav is this oh-so-chic tufted chair. Love the low seat, small scale and cherry-red color (just like "my" sandals).

Denpasar Collection in Australia

A client in Australia used our Denpasar Collection to decorate the outdoor areas of this spectacular new home.

As the capital city of Bali, Indonesia, Denpasar was largely a market area at the turn of the 20th century. Later, in the 1920s and 1930s, it became an early home to the tourist trade.

No wonder. The city is in the heart of a spiritual culture that began thousands of years ago and still flourishes today.

Folklore reads that Bali—a place rich with villages, temples,gardens and beaches—is the home of the gods on earth.

Water Hyacinth

Often, when a plant or animal is removed from its natural environment and introduced into a new one, the ecological balance is upset. Such was the case when the water hyacinth was introduced into Thailand. It quickly invaded the local canals and waterways, creating a nuisance much the same way kudzu has in the southeastern United States.

An extremely fast-growing plant, water hyacinth is an ecologically responsible alternative to wicker and rattan, as it is a raw material that can be used in its natural state and one of the few that quickly replenishes itself. Compared to wicker and rattan, water hyacinth is much softer and smoother to the touch, as well as lighter and less brittle.

The plant is what Century calls “green,” meaning it needs hardly any processing to manufacture – again, making it a more environmentally conscious material than wicker or rattan. Even the few teak parts that are used in this collection are made from wood purchased from strictly monitored “farms” that are replanted under Thailand government supervision.
The young hyacinth stems are hand-picked from the waterways and sun-dried. The finest stems are then selected and braided. The braids are then interwoven between hundreds of small reeds to become the upholstery for the hand-cut wood and rattan frames. Once these frames are “upholstered,” the pieces are sprayed with three coats of water-based flat lacquer to add stain and dirt resistance. Since Century uses absolutely no stain, dye, or varnish on the finished pieces, the natural, rich golden hue of the dried hyacinth is not compromised. The entire process can take weeks from start to finish, but the result is a beautiful and distinctive piece of hand-woven furniture.

Water hyacinth, a waterway pest, now provides furniture of heirloom quality. Whether you are choosing furniture for your bedroom, family room or sun room, Century’s Water Hyacinth will grace your home beautifully for many years.

Furniture Survives Hurrican Katrina

From time to time we receive letters from customers that have had unususual experiences relating to furnitiure they have purchased from us. Here's a story about some furniture that lived through as hurricane! This furniture was from our Coddington Square Collection.
Hi Gaye,

We are so very pleased to have saved the Century Furniture in our home that went through being submerged in 3 feet of water from Hurricane Katrina for several days in Slidell, Louisiana. The dining room Century Furniture was the only furniture to survive the storm's damage. I have attached photos of several of the pieces.

We saved the dining room table and chairs by removing them from the soaked oriental rug and placing them on the hardwood floor to dry out. Despite the intense heat of the house, the furniture dried perfectly.

We had to pull off the back of the Sideboard to remove water-soaked linens that caused the drawers to swell and seal. I used a solution of bleach and water to kill the mold and mildew that developed. The piece also dried to its original beautiful form. One drawer had to be re-built, but it's front piece remained in tact.

The dual china cabinets survived very well. The lower cabinet doors were in tact and I removed the water-filled china, etc, that the piece contained.

We are so very pleased that the furniture survived the devastation, and so grateful to the excellent craftsmanship and pride that Century puts into its products. The story of how the furniture survived is retold each time the family gathers for meals and holidays.

The days and months following Katrina have been very painful, but their is comfort knowing that we have not lost EVERYTHNG that is so dear to us. The Century furniture survived and will be handed down from generation to generation in our family.

How to Buy a Quality Sofa

When it comes to selecting a sofa, the choices are endless. Fabric, leather, or a combination of both … every possibility is available to create stylish seating in your living space.

But before you get carried away with finishes or features, there are a few basic considerations and decisions that will ensure you will be sitting comfortably with your new purchase.

Sofa Check List
Examine the space – Each room has a natural location for the main seating. Generally this will be parallel to the fireplace or perpindicular to the television. Check that there is enough access to other features in the room, make sure that doorways are not obstructed and power points are accessible. Is there suitable floor space to place a coffee table and lamps?

Measuring Up – An effective way of judging what size of sofa, apartment sofa, Love Seat or Setee will suit the space is to place a large piece of paper matching the sofa's footprint on the floor. This 'map' will give you a feel for the maximum dimensions available and how the sofa will work with existing furniture.

If you are good with a computer, many websites have floor planners where you can draw the room and rearrange furniture to your hearts content.

Make sure you can get the sofa in the room! Get the tape measure out to take a note of the dimensions of the doorways – both into the living space and through the main access point. The last thing you want is to have to remove doors to make way for your new purchase! Many larger designs (such as the corner groups) come as modular units which can un-click for this very reason.

Usage – As with any other practical feature of your home, your new sofa must reflect your lifestyle. Do you have young children or pets? Do you eat in this room? Do you entertain regularly? Is there access to the garden from the living space? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, a sturdy frame and an easy-to-clean surface are essential. There is little point setting your heart on the beautifully upholstered cream chaise, only to have it soiled or damaged in a short space of time. Function must follow form.

Time to Buy
With your check list examined it is time to make more decisions!

Dynamic shapes work to great effect in modern settings. Once considered a luxury item, leather sofas are now widely available and affordable. The considerable advantage of leather is its longevity. A great choice for families with youngsters or pets, this hardy material is easy to clean and will better with age. However, the price tag will relate to the 'grade' of leather and the more you spend, generally, the better the quality. If you plan not to change the seating for several years, avoid leather look-a-likes. Always check stitching and the quality of the cushion's zips.

Upholstered sofas are enjoying a renaissance in popularity, with plush fabrics and exquisite patterns extensively available. Previously only accessible from bespoke furniture upholsterers, great quality fabric sofas with professional finishes are available from many High Street retailers. However, it is important to be mindful of existing furnishings to ensure the patterns work together.

Fillings – What is inside your sofa is probably the last consideration on your mind, but it will affect the look, feel and comfort of your seating. There are three main categories: foam, fibre or feather-filled. If the seating is not used a great deal, foam is an adequate and cheaper choice. Fibre has a softer feel and is less expensive than feather filling. The latter is the most luxurious, moulding to your form. Plumping of cushions is required to maintain shape.

Style and Shape – Contemporary or classic; angular or curved? High back or low roll-back? There are a bewildering number of style choices, but having identified the practical considerations in our check list, you will now know the best type of sofa for you and your home. The style will be denoted by your preference of furnishings. A modern home will provide the best setting for a stunning angular sofa with minimalist styling. A period home will therefore be home to traditional forms, such as Chesterfields, button back details and carved legs.

By doing your homework before you begin searching, you will be able to identify the perfect sofa, and avoid costly mistakes.

Okay, full disclosure, I started this post months before April's High Point market and got a bit sidetracked by press releases and market preparations so never finished it! The idea was to show our design process, start to finish, for our showroom here in High Point. If you are anything like me, the task of outfitting your own home is daunting, much less 80,000 square feet twice a year! Often I get asked, "How do you do that? I can't imagine recreating this space for each market." So I thought I would show some of the behind the scenes process.

2 MONTHS BEFORE MARKETA sea of folding tables hold brand new fabrics samples that our Creative Director, Laurie Reed, and Vice President of Upholstery Fashion, Anne Hood, hunt through in order to find just the right one to tell our spring story. This is what this Century Signature Upholstery gallery looked like in February.

OPENING DAY APRIL MARKET 2010 It is hard to even recognize this as the same room! All tables put aside and we are dressed up and ready for company. Here the dramatic Oscar de la Renta shell benches in a chalk white finish start to tell the tale of Century Signature Upholstery with a new sofa from this market positioned directly behind. This market gray was our neutral for this gallery, livened up with celery greens.

BEFORE MARKETIn this room Laurie and Anne literally map out each room in our showroom in fabric. The walls are lined with cardboard. Fabric memos and showroom renderings are pinned up by room and product line. You can see on the back wall the Pagoda fabric which was the beginning of our lobby plans.

APRIL MARKET 2010

Here all the cardboard has been tucked away to showcase another Century Signature Upholstery room. Laurie and Anne mixed metallics in a dramatic and sophisticated way. Note the stainless steel chair in a metallic floral!

I know most of us are probably glad to bid farewell to 2009 and welcome 2010 but I wanted to share some of the many highlights for Century in the past year. A big "thank you" to the entire Century team and extended family of partners for making these accomplishments happen.

Established in 1947 in the town of Hickory, North Carolina, Century began as a casegoods manufacturer producing 18th century style mahogany dining room suites. Today Century Furniture is still a family owned company and a luxury leader of finely crafted home furniture ranging from traditional to contemporary and covering casegoods, upholstery and outdoor furniture. Some of the grandest homes in the United States, including the White House, have furnishings from Century Furniture.
